This inconsistency exists partly because the UK sizing system is based on the old Barleycorn unit (a third of an inch per size) while the European system is measured in Paris Points (roughly 6.66mm per size). That means the higher the size, the bigger the opportunity for errors and discrepancies between conversion charts.
